School orientation in Massar: submitting your preferences

A plain-language guide to school orientation (التوجيه) in your Massar student space: when it matters, and how to review the available branches, rank your preferences and confirm them before the deadline.

School orientation (التوجيه) is the process through which a student expresses their academic choices and is assigned a pathway at the key transition points of their schooling. Through your Massar student space, during an official open window, you review the available branches, rank your preferences and confirm them. This guide explains when orientation matters, how to submit your preferences correctly, and what happens afterwards.

When orientation matters

Orientation matters most at the major transition points:

End of lower-secondary

In the third year of collège (3ème année collège), the student expresses a wish to move toward one of the common cores (جذع مشترك) in upper-secondary (such as the science or literature common core, depending on what’s offered).

Within upper-secondary

During high school, orientation matters when moving toward the baccalaureate streams (الشعب) — such as science, literature, economics and others. The available branches and tracks vary from year to year and from one academy to another, so always rely on the list shown in your own space.

How to submit your preferences

Follow these steps in order during the open window:

  1. Sign in to your student space through the login page on the official portal.
  2. Open the orientation (التوجيه) section while it is active during the official window.
  3. Read the guidance and instructions shown, and review the list of available branches.
  4. Make your choices, then rank your preferences (الرغبات) from first to last according to your priorities.
  5. Review the ranking carefully, then press Confirm / Submit before the deadline.

After submitting, it’s a good idea to confirm that a message or status shows your preferences were saved successfully.

What happens next

Once the orientation window closes, the decision isn’t automatic just because you submitted your preferences. The orientation councils review students’ files and make the final decision based on:

  • Your grades and academic results.
  • The ranked preferences you submitted.
  • The available capacity in each branch or school.

As a result, some students are assigned their first preference, while others receive a later preference depending on grades and available places. You can later follow your results on the results page.

How orientation decisions are made

Understanding how the decision is reached helps you rank your preferences realistically. When the window closes, the orientation councils (المجالس) convene and don’t rely on your preference alone — they weigh three main elements together:

  • Your grades and average: academic results carry significant weight, especially in the subjects tied to the branch you want. The overall average and specific grades can be a condition for entry into branches that are in high demand.
  • Your ranked preferences (الرغبات): your ranking shows the council your priorities in order, so your first choice is considered first, then the next one if it isn’t possible.
  • Available capacity and the school map (الخريطة المدرسية): each branch or school has a limited number of places. Even if you rank a branch first, admission isn’t guaranteed if your grades don’t allow it or the places are already full.

In other words, a top preference is never a guarantee; the council balances students’ preferences against grades and available places, which is why some students are assigned a later choice. To follow the decision announced after the councils meet, return to the results page.

Tips for ranking your preferences wisely

Ranking your preferences isn’t just an administrative step — it’s a chance to reflect on your path. A few practical tips:

  • Start from your strengths and goals: think about the subjects you excel in and enjoy, and the career or training you’re aiming for, then choose the branch closest to that.
  • Be realistic: compare your preferences against your current grades. It’s fine to include ambitious choices, but add balanced ones that match your results so your ranking isn’t limited to branches that are hard to enter.
  • Put your genuine first choice first: make the top spot what you truly want, not what others expect of you — the council starts from your highest preferences.
  • Seek advice from the guidance counselor: your school’s counselor (المستشار في التوجيه) knows the branches, tracks and prospects, and can help you compare them objectively. Don’t hesitate to ask questions.
  • Don’t leave it to the last day: take your time to compare and review, and submit early in moutamadris (موتمدرس) to avoid any last-minute technical pressure.

Troubleshooting

The orientation section isn’t visible

The section is only open during the official window. If you can’t find it, the window probably hasn’t opened yet or has already closed. Check the dates with your school administration.

I can’t submit, or the button is greyed out

  • Make sure you have ranked all the required preferences with no empty slot.
  • Refresh the page, or try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox or Edge).
  • Check that your internet connection is stable before pressing Confirm.

I want to change a choice after submitting

Changes may be possible as long as the deadline hasn’t passed — reopen the section, change the ranking and confirm again. If the deadline has passed, speak with your school’s guidance counselor about your options.

I missed the submission window

If the window closed before you submitted your preferences, you usually can’t submit through your space after the deadline. Don’t wait: go straight to your school administration or the guidance counselor to explain your situation and ask whether any exceptional procedure or catch-up period applies. In this case the decision rests with the school and the academy.

I want to appeal my assigned branch

If you were assigned a branch other than your first preference and believe your grades allow a different one, you can usually submit a request for review (appeal) through your school administration. Appeal deadlines and procedures vary from year to year and from one academy to another, so ask early about the required documents and timelines. The final decision remains with the orientation councils, based on grades and available places.

The branch I want isn’t listed for my school

Not every school offers all branches and tracks; the list shown in your space reflects what’s available within the school map (الخريطة المدرسية). If the branch you want isn’t listed, it may be offered at another school. Ask the guidance counselor about the possibility of being oriented to a different school and the conditions involved.

Choosing your academic path is an important decision; ask your teacher or guidance counselor if you’re unsure, and rank your preferences carefully before confirming.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the orientation section in my space?
The orientation section is only available during the official window set by the Ministry and your academy. If you don’t see it, the window has probably not opened yet or has already closed. Check the exact dates with your school administration.
Can I change a preference after I’ve confirmed it?
This may be possible as long as the deadline hasn’t passed — reopen the section, adjust the ranking and confirm again. After the deadline it’s hard to change, and it’s best to speak with your school’s guidance counselor.
Who decides the final orientation?
The final decision is made by the orientation councils, based on your grades and results, your ranked preferences, and the available capacity in each branch. Your preference matters, but it isn’t the only factor.
Does putting a branch first guarantee I’ll get it?
No. Ranking a branch first only shows your preference — admission still depends on your grades and the branch’s available capacity in the school map. If your grades don’t allow it or the places are full, you may be assigned a later preference in your ranking.
